We all wash our hands several times a day, but are we washing them properly? There is in fact an ideal method for washing your hands correctly, and in this article we will tell you all about it.
Wash your hands properly with these 5 easy rules
Follow the rules in order from 1 to 5 and your hands will be so clean you could eat straight off them. We will also share a few tips on how to teach your children to wash their hands just as thoroughly.
Step one: Wet your hands
Begin the washing process by wetting your hands thoroughly with water. The water should be warm, or at least lukewarm, as this helps to remove bacteria from your hands.
Step two: Apply soap
Once your hands are wet, apply soap. Use enough to cover your hands on all sides.
Step three: Wash every part of them
The next 6 steps should take you at least 20 seconds if you do them properly. If you are teaching your children to wash their hands, teach them to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice before they finish. This will help them remember that washing matters, that it takes time and should not be rushed — and it will make it more fun for them too. After all, most people do not spend the time needed to wash their hands properly.
- Start by rubbing your palms together in circular motions.
- Rub the back of one hand with the other, interlacing your fingers as you move them back and forth. Repeat on the other side.
- Rub your palms together again, interlacing your fingers at the same time.
- Wash well between your fingers, and do not forget your thumbs.
- Now wash thoroughly under your nails, where bacteria and dirt often collect.
Step four: Rinse your hands
Rinse your hands thoroughly with warm or lukewarm water.
Step five: Dry your hands
Finally, dry your hands completely using a hand towel. After touching door handles or light switches, it is a good idea to clean your hands again.
