Transdermal magnesium therapy in sport
Increased magnesium requirements during sport
Magnesium plays an exceptionally important role in the metabolic processes involved in the synthesis or exchange of high-energy compounds (e.g. glucose). More than 300 enzymes in the human body are known to contain magnesium, and the enzymes involved in glucose metabolism need magnesium to be activated. This means that without magnesium our body could not use the energy released. When lactate is formed in the muscle cells (during anaerobic glucose metabolism), physical performance becomes limited, so this by-product has to be removed from the body as quickly as possible – a process that again requires magnesium. Because of their active metabolism, people who do a lot of sport need an adequate intake of magnesium.
Magnesium supports the normal functioning of the muscles
Intense physical activity and heavy exertion during sport cause profuse sweating, through which considerable amounts of magnesium are lost. Fluid loss is significant (around 2 litres per hour), particularly at high temperatures and high air humidity. Magnesium deficiency is also caused by the increased consumption of magnesium due to the active metabolism and the accelerated renal excretion of magnesium. Athletes are subject to prolonged physical exertion and suffer from magnesium deficiency more often than people who do not take part in sport actively. The amount of magnesium we obtain from food is often insufficient to maintain the body’s magnesium balance. It should be borne in mind that athletes make up for the loss of magnesium during the recovery phase. In this way magnesium deficiency can be avoided even before physical activity begins, by taking magnesium beforehand. Where intake is inadequate, magnesium deficiency in athletes and active sportspeople quickly manifests itself as neuromuscular hyperexcitability, a tendency towards muscle strains, muscle spasms and torn muscle fibres.
Magnesium helps you achieve better sporting performance
The recommended daily dose for athletes is around 5 mg of magnesium per kilogram of body weight. The increased magnesium requirements of people who train actively cannot be met through food alone, which is why magnesium supplementation is needed. Taking magnesium regularly during the recovery phase helps athletes maintain the levels of fitness they have achieved.
Do you often suffer from cramp and muscle strain?
The symptoms characteristic of magnesium deficiency are painful calf cramps, which most often occur at night, as well as strain in the muscles of the neck and nape. To make up for a magnesium shortfall, a regular and sustained intake of magnesium is required.
Obtaining magnesium
The main source of magnesium is the food we eat. The amount absorbed depends on the composition and nutritional properties of the food and on how it is prepared.
Causes of magnesium deficiency
- Disturbed balance. Magnesium deficiency has been found to be present in 13% of all illnesses.
- Reduced intake. An inadequate dietary intake of magnesium can be brought about by eating unbalanced food, by following weight-loss diets, by eating fast food and so on.
- Increased requirements. Increased magnesium requirements occur during growth, during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, and under excessive physical and mental strain. The need for magnesium also rises with excessive alcohol consumption, with the consumption of foods rich in phosphates, and during drug treatment that causes increased excretion of magnesium from the body.
How can we improve the body’s absorption of magnesium?
- By intravenous injection. This is routine practice, for example after a heart attack, but of course it can only be administered under medical supervision.
- As a supplement to food or water. The drawback of this method is unwanted side effects, such as diarrhoea.
- Transdermally. This means absorption through the skin. With transdermal application, the purity of the product is of key importance in preventing unwanted absorption. Magnesium oil is very easily absorbed by the skin, from where the magnesium ions are distributed throughout the whole body. Transdermal therapy is suitable and effective in almost all medical conditions and situations and can act just as quickly as an intravenous drip.
Is a magnesium overdose possible?
Only with transdermal therapy does the body absorb just the amount of magnesium it needs, which is why overdosing is impossible with this method of absorption.
Magnesium deficiency and its consequences
- Cramp and muscle strain. Typical symptoms of magnesium deficiency are painful calf cramps, which often occur at night, as well as strain in the neck and shoulder muscles. Strained muscles are a sign of increased tension in your body and are most often seen with stress and nervous tension. Twitching eyelids and tingling fingers are also symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Tip: if you get calf cramps at night, apply magnesium oil in the evening before going to bed.
- Heart problems. In the body’s biochemical processes magnesium is often an antagonist of calcium. In this way it controls and regulates the natural stimulating effect of calcium. A shortage of magnesium in the body can aggravate cardiac complaints and rhythm disturbances.
- Nervous system. As an antagonist of calcium, magnesium suppresses the release of the stress hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline. An inadequate intake of magnesium shows itself in nervousness, difficulty concentrating, reduced physical activity and irritability. In patients with migraine, magnesium deficiency can increase the frequency of attacks.
